Pinquo is Colin Thiele's story of an injured fairy penguin that is nursed back to health by two children in a seaside town. Later Pinquo returns to save the people who have shown him such kindness.

Recommended for middle and upper primary



The Hobbit or There and Back Again 
was first published in 1937. The book title is often shortened to The Hobbit. Join Bilbo Baggins on a quest through a world of trolls, goblins, elves, dwarves and wizards.

Recommended for Years 5 to 8.

was written in 1966 by well known Australian author, Colin Thiele. A story of country kids, funny adventures and an horrific bushfire. 

Recommended for Years 5 to 7.

Mahtab's Story is a novel about escaping from an oppressive government,  a dangerous ocean voyage, living in detention, and the bravery of a young girl. Libby Gleeson's novel is a thought-provoking read.

Recommended for Years 5 to 8



The classic children's story told from the perspective of a horse. The author, Anna Sewell, was an advocate for animal rights. She died in 1878, just five months after the novel was published.

Recommended for Years 4 to 7.

Meet Roland, the skinny, clumsy son of the village blacksmith who dreams of becoming a knight. Roland Wright, Future Knight is the funny story of a boy, his mouse and lots of adventures.

Recommended for Years 2 to 4.



Rowan of Rin 
is the first of five books in Emily Rodda's Rowan series. Rowan is a young boy who sets off on a quest to save his village. An unlikely hero, Rowan must find the courage to battle giant spiders and a cranky dragon.

Recommended for Years 4 to 6.



Once and Then are the first two books in a series by Morris Gleitzman. The main character is a young Jewish boy who lives in Poland during World War Two, the time when Nazis tried to eliminate the Jewish people. These novels tell the story of Felix's search for his parents - a story of love, friendship and courage in terrible times.

Recommended for Years 6 to 9.
